π Social Sensitivity (Reward Dependence)
How strongly you register human warmth β the antenna for emotional connection.
TCI temperament dimension Β· wired in from birth
What this dimension measures
Reward Dependence is the temperament dimension for how sensitively you pick up social signals: expressions, praise, approval, the temperature of a room. A large antenna registers a shift in a relationship the moment it happens. A smaller one carries on regardless.
High scorers get described as warm, low scorers as independent. The high version draws energy from people and gets drained by them in equal measure; the low version is self-sufficient and periodically mistaken for cold. Neither is the better setting β but knowing the size of your own antenna makes relationships considerably less confusing.
People high in Social Sensitivity
Someone who reads a change in mood the way other people read the weather. One piece of praise fuels a week; one cold remark unsettles the same week. There's a real talent here for looking after people and holding a group together β along with a matching difficulty with goodbyes of any kind.
- Catches small shifts in tone and expression immediately
- Praise and recognition are powerful motivators
- Warm with people, and keeps friendships going for years
- Finds saying no genuinely difficult
- Empathy runs deep enough that other people's bad news hurts
Worth watching out for
- Self-worth wobbles with other people's opinions
- Never refusing anything leads directly to overload
- One unresolved conflict bleeds into everything else
People low in Social Sensitivity
An independent operator who runs on their own standards rather than the room's. Trends and appraisals don't move them much, and solitude is charging rather than spending. This is the person you want making the call when objectivity matters β though the people closest to them occasionally wish for a little more visible reaction.
- Not easily shaken by other people's judgements
- Genuinely recharges in their own company
- Strong at decisions based on facts rather than feelings
- Says no without much drama when no is the right answer
Worth watching out for
- Easily misread as cold or uninterested
- Can miss the emotional response the other person was waiting for
- Tries to solve things alone even when help is on offer
Environments and work that fit
High Reward Dependence turns the antenna into a professional skill β counselling, teaching, nursing, service design, HR. Low Reward Dependence suits work that rewards objectivity and independence β analysis, valuation, research, remote roles. High scorers need to manage the total volume of emotional labour they take on; low scorers need to make their reactions deliberately visible when they collaborate.
How to work with this dimension
If you score high: put a budget on the relationship account. The moment you try to be good to absolutely everyone, the balance hits zero. Simply deciding who gets your attention this week cuts the drain dramatically. If you score low: let people know the feeling is there and it's the expression circuit that's wired differently. Then, with the handful of people who matter most, add one deliberate spoonful of reaction β that spoonful is what keeps the relationship.
If your child looks high in Reward Dependence
Not oversensitivity β an unusually large antenna. For these children a parent's expression or a teacher's tone can set the weather for an entire day. Two things matter most: make praise specific ("thank you for looking after your sister" rather than "good job"), and make correction clearly about the behaviour rather than the bond ("I'm not angry at you, I'm talking about this one thing"). Grown well, this kind of empathy becomes a talent that keeps other people afloat.
Frequently asked questions
What are people high in Reward Dependence like?
Highly attuned to other people's feelings and to social signals generally. They draw energy from relationships and are naturally good at caring for people, but their sense of self can swing with other people's opinions, which makes budgeting relational energy the key skill.
Does a low Reward Dependence score mean having no empathy?
No. Feeling empathy and reacting visibly to social signals are two different things. Low scorers simply express it plainly, and they come with real strengths of their own β objectivity and independence chief among them.
Is this the same as Reward Dependence in the official TCI?
It maps onto the same idea: sensitivity to social reward such as approval and affection. This write-up is our own material inspired by TCI theory rather than anything taken from the official inventory.
